With its softly rounded silhouette and shimmering surface, this large ceramic cache pot from the Haviland atelier in Auteuil captures the transition between late 19th-century naturalism and the emerging Art Nouveau style. Dated circa 1875, it bears the mark of Haviland Limoges but was most likely created in their Auteuil workshop, a more experimental and artist-led branch of the famed porcelain house. Though unsigned, the decoration is consistent with the hand of Charles Midoux, a known ceramic painter who worked in the Auteuil studio during the 1870s.
Founded by David Haviland in the mid-19th century, Haviland Limoges rose to international renown for its fine porcelain, which graced the tables of European courts and American elites. The Auteuil atelier, established near Paris, was conceived as a creative extension of the main factory, a space where artists could explore freer forms, painterly glazes, and hand-rendered decoration. Charles Midoux, active in the Auteuil studio during this period, brought a refined and lyrical sensibility to his work, blending detailed botanical studies with the looseness of impressionistic surface treatment. The surface of this cache pot is richly expressive, with a glaze that shifts between earthy browns, smoky greys, and deep, iridescent blues. Fine gilded decoration featuring long-stemmed flowers, curling leaves, and wild grasses winds across the body with poetic fluidity. Raised ornamental bosses add sculptural rhythm, catching light in soft glints. Minor chips around the foot are visible but do not detract from the piece’s strong presence.
A beautiful fusion of painterly surface and sculptural form, this cache pot lends itself to display in a conservatory, salon, or entrance hall, either on its own or paired with tall branches or understated floral arrangements. Its palette and form speak of quiet luxury, balancing naturalism and artistic expression with timeless elegance.
