This whimsical glazed stoneware terrine dish by contemporary ceramic artist Julie Desert Armanville is both functional and sculptural, crafted with playful spirit and a sharp eye for storytelling. The lid is shaped by two endearing modeled figures: a jovial chef, moustachioed and wearing a traditional toque and apron, lovingly embraces a smiling woman holding a kitchen towel, her blouse and expressive features rendered with tender, humorous detail. Their intimate pose and cheerful expressions evoke warmth and familiarity, celebrating shared moments in the kitchen and the joy of everyday life.
The hand-built textures and earthy glaze palette enhance its rustic charm, while the wit and character of the scene bring a rare sense of personality to functional ceramics. Stamped with the artist’s initials “JDA” on the underside, it is the work of Julie Desert Armanville, whose contemporary ceramics celebrate both charm and craftsmanship. She played a significant role at the Roger Capron design studio in Vallauris between 1972 and 1982.
Whether displayed on a kitchen shelf, dining console, or used as a serving piece, this terrine adds a delightful narrative touch to any setting, infusing the space with charm, creativity, and a sense of heartfelt craftsmanship.
