Vibrant and unmistakably Art Nouveau, this large ceramic cache pot is adorned with boldly stylized tulips in soft purples, vivid yellows, and delicate greens, hand-painted against a warm terracotta-toned ground. The dynamic interplay between the fluid floral motifs and the earthy background creates a striking visual rhythm, full of movement and color contrast emblematic of the decorative language of the early 20th century. Signed Jérôme Massier Fils Vallauris beneath the base and bearing the painted signature Max within the décor, this piece reflects the collaborative spirit and artistic ambition of the Massier atelier. Around 1900, the workshop was a creative hub in Vallauris, producing richly decorated ceramics that embraced the emerging Art Nouveau style.
While certain forms and motifs were repeated as models, each piece, especially when decorated by hand, was treated as a unique artwork distinguished by the painter’s gesture, palette, and personal interpretation. The decorator Max brought a distinctive sensibility to floral compositions, as seen in the expressive contours and carefully layered tones.
A discreet and well-executed restoration preserves the structural and visual integrity of the piece. With its generous proportions and radiant surface, this cache pot makes a compelling statement in a conservatory, on a pedestal, or as a standalone sculptural element, celebrating the intersection of artistry and craftsmanship in Provençal ceramic tradition.
