Delicate in scale yet rich in ornamentation, this pair of small candlesticks exemplifies the refined decorative arts of late 19th-century France. Rendered in gilt bronze and adorned with intricate cloisonné enamel, each form is slender and elegant, tapering into a flared bobeche and resting atop a petal-edged base. The colorful enamel, featuring soft blues, ruby red, and accents of ivory and gold—has been meticulously inlaid in scrolling motifs typical of the Orientalist aesthetic. Though unsigned, the exceptional quality of casting and enameling, as well as the distinctive design, suggest a connection to the renowned Barbedienne foundry.
Founded by Ferdinand Barbedienne in 1838, the Parisian atelier became famous for its technical mastery in bronze and its collaborations with leading designers, producing objects that merged classical form with exotic influence. These candlesticks echo that legacy, with their rich polychrome detail and elegant silhouette. Perfect on a mantelpiece, writing desk, or coffee table, these candlesticks bring a glint of historic luxury to any intimate interior tableau.
