Glowing with devotional splendor and rich ornamentation, this 19th-century Santibelli of the Virgin and Child under glass dome is a superb example of Provençal popular piety. Crafted in polychrome and gilt terracotta, the Virgin stands in a frontal pose, robed in shimmering gold and crowned, holding the Christ Child in her arms. Both figures wear radiant halos, and the base takes the form of a stylized cloud, adorned with charming cherubs and decorative scrollwork. Overhead, a canopy trimmed in red and gold and framed by fine metallic threads and embellishments adds theatrical dimension and ceremonial grandeur.

Originating in Marseille and its surrounding regions, santibellis are named from the Provençal  "santi belli", meaning “beautiful saints.” These folk devotional figures were created from the late 18th through the 19th century. Meant to be kept in the home as personal shrines, they were protected under glass domes and often elaborately decorated with materials like tinsel, paper, textiles, and imitation jewels. This vibrant tradition brought sacred imagery into the domestic sphere with a unique blend of faith, craftsmanship, and local aesthetic.

Paced under an antique dome, this example retains its vivid color and ornamentation. One cherub’s head is missing and the base shows some wear consistent with age. Despite these signs of time, the sculpture remains richly expressive and visually arresting, a luminous testimony to devotional artistry and folk tradition.
